Your Body’s User Manual: The Essentials to Supporting your Nervous System using Somatic Experiencing (SE)
Have you ever felt like your body was overreacting to a situation but no matter how much you tried talking yourself out of it, that tight chest, racing heart, increased tension, heaviness, wouldn't budge?
It’s because your nervous system doesn't speak English (or any other language). It speaks sensation.
If you’ve been feeling stuck, ‘wired but tired’ or just disconnected from yourself, you aren't broken, lazy, weak, useless. You just haven’t been given the user manual for your nervous system. Here are the three core concepts of Somatic Experiencing (SE) that explain why you feel the way you do and how we can help you find your way back to yourself again.
1. The Traffic Light: Understanding Your States
Think of your nervous system like a traffic light. Most of us are stuck in a color we didn’t choose:
Green (Social Engagement): You feel calm, connected, and curious. Your body knows it is safe.
Yellow (Fight or Flight): Your heart is racing, your breath is shallow, and you feel anxious or irritable. Your body is preparing for a threat; a presentation, a meeting, an event, a trip.
Red (Freeze/Shutdown): You feel numb, heavy, or checked/zoned out. This is your body’s emergency brake when things feel like too much to handle. You just finished an exam, yo
The Goal: In SE, we don’t try to force ourselves into Green. We learn to notice where we are and gently help the body shift gears.
2. Titration: Why We "Sip" Instead of "Gulp"
Many people avoid healing because they’re afraid of being overwhelmed by their past. They think they have to dive head-first into the trauma.
In SE, we use Titration. Imagine a drop of acid in a glass of water, if you pour the whole bottle, it’s a mess. If you add one tiny drop at a time, the water can neutralize it.
The Approach: We process your stress in tiny droplets.
The Result: You heal without being re-traumatized. It’s gentle, it’s slow, and it actually sticks.
3. Pendulation: The Art of the Swing
This is where the magic happens. Your nervous system naturally wants to move, but trauma makes it feel stuck. We use Pendulation to get things moving again.
Think of a pendulum swinging between two points:
The Resource (The Cozy Couch with Soft Pillows & Throws): This is a place in your body or your mind that feels okay, neutral, or even good. It’s your anchor.
The Vortex (The Cold, Windy Storm): This is where the tension, the anxiety, internal chaos or the discomfort lives. It’s something most of us prefer to understandably not go towards.
We don't just sit in the storm. We gently swing from the Resource to the Vortex and back again. By touching the discomfort and then returning to safety, your body realizes it can handle the ‘charge’.
The Discharge: As we pendulate, your body finally lets go of that trapped energy. This might look like a deep sigh, a shiver, a yawn, or a sudden sense of warmth. That is your system reorganizing itself.
Why This Matters
Somatic Experiencing isn't about fixing you; it's about helping your body complete the cycles of survival that got stuck in the ‘on’ position.
