War Trauma Part 2 - The Lead Blanket: Why War-Struck Systems Shut Down
When a threat is too big or lasts too long, the body throws an "emergency brake". This crushing, heavy fatigue or "Lead Blanket" isn't laziness; it’s a masterclass in survival. Discover how we gently work to lift the weight.
After Being Stuck “On” for a Prolonged Period: Understanding "The Lead Blanket" (The Freeze)
When we talk about the trauma of war or constant conflict (even at home), we often think of being stuck “on” in fight or flight, racing hearts, jumping at loud noises, and constant anxiety.
For many, however, the experience is the opposite. It’s a heavy, crushing fatigue. Or Freeze. It’s sleeping for 10 hours and waking up feeling like you’ve been hit by a truck. It’s a feeling of being "checked out" or moving through life under a layer of glass.
When a threat is too big, too close, or lasts too long, the body realizes it can’t fight or flee. So, it does the only thing left: It freezes or said differently, shuts down to protect you.
The Engine Under the Blanket
Think of your nervous system like a high-performance car engine.
The "Wired" State: The engine is revving at 8000 RPMs. You feel the vibration (anxiety, insomnia, rage).
The "Heavy" State: The engine is still revving at 8000 RPMs, but your body has thrown a dense and heavy 500kg lead blanket over it to muffle the sound.
You feel the "heavy" (the blanket), but underneath, the "wired" (the engine) is still burning fuel. This is why you feel exhausted but never truly rested. Your body is using all its energy just to keep that engine muffled.
Why War is Different
Most trauma theories focus on a single event. War, however, is an environment. Because the threat is "inescapable" for a long period, your nervous system forgets how to turn the engine off. It learns that safety is a luxury it can't afford.
Even when you are in a safe bed, in a quiet room, your Guard is still patrolling the perimeter. You aren't sleeping, you are “sleeping one eye open".
How We Unstick the System
The mistake most people make is trying to "force" themselves to have more energy. But if you just rip the blanket off a revving engine, all that fight or flight energy, anxiety, vibration or whatever you want to call it comes rushing in.
In our sessions, we work differently:
Acknowledge the Shield: We don't fight the heaviness. We thank it. It’s the shield that kept you alive when things were too much.
Gently Cool the Engine: Using Titration (those tiny "sips" we talked about), we slowly let the steam (discharge) out of the engine.
The "All Clear" Signal: We help your body realize, not just your mind that the Guard can finally nap.
The result? Sleep that actually refreshes you. A body that feels light instead of leaden.
