War Trauma Part 1 - Stuck “On”: The Hyper-vigilance of War/Prolonged Conflict
In a war zone or prolonged conflict (even at home), hyper-vigilance is a gift. But when the threat is gone and your Guard is still patrolling the perimeter, that gift becomes exhausting. You aren't overreacting; your engine is just still revving at 8,000 RPMs to ensure you stay safe. Let’s help your system learn that it is finally safe to stand down.

Effects of War Keeping You Stuck “On”: Why You Can’t "Turn Off" Even When You’re Exhausted
Have you ever felt a literal vibration in your limbs? Like your nerves are a guitar string pulled too tight?
You are exhausted. Your brain wants to sleep. Your muscles ache. But the moment you lay down, your heart starts to thud, your mind starts to scan the room, and you feel an inexplicable "charge" running through your system.
This is the classic Wired but Tired state. In Somatic Experiencing, we see this as a nervous system that has forgotten how to downshift.
The Guard at the Gate
If you have lived through war or prolonged conflict (such as at home), your nervous system had to become a Guard. Its job was to keep you alive by scanning for danger 24/7.
The Problem: The war moved on, but the Guard didn't get the memo.
The Result: Your body is still dumping small amounts of adrenaline into your system every few minutes "just in case."
You aren't anxious in the way people usually mean it. You are highly activated. You’re idling at 8,000 RPMs while parked in your driveway. No wonder you’re exhausted, you’re burning a week’s worth of fuel every single day.
Why "Just Relaxing" Doesn't Work
This is the most frustrating part: for a Wired system, relaxation actually feels dangerous.
When the Guard is on watch, relaxing feels like an invitation for an attack. This is why you might feel more anxious when you try to meditate or sit in silence. Your body thinks, "If I relax, I’ll miss the warning sign."
How We Downshift Together
We don’t force the Guard to stand down. That just creates more internal conflict. Instead, we use SE tools to show the body that it is safe for the Guard to snooze (relax) from time to time.
Orienting to the Present: We teach your eyes and ears to confirm to your brain that right now, in this room, there is no drone, no missiles and no threat.
Discharging the Current: We find ways to let that "vibration" out of your limbs, maybe through a small movement, a breath, or a specific sound so it doesn't stay trapped in your muscles.
Building a Container: We help your system realize it can hold this energy without being overwhelmed by it.
